Unlock Your Leadership Potential: The Power of Listening and Weekly Check-Ins

In today’s fast-paced world, effective communication often gets lost in the shuffle. A recent Harvard Business Review study highlights a critical aspect of our interactions: listening. In 1984, Dr. Howard Beckman and his team recorded 74 medical conversations, revealing a troubling pattern. Seventy percent of patients were interrupted within 20 seconds of speaking, and only 2% managed to finish their initial thoughts. Even after 15 years, these interruptions persisted. This startling data serves as a reminder that we miss invaluable opportunities to connect and understand when we don’t fully listen. (Source: Harvard Business Review

Reflecting on this, I recognize that I too am guilty of interrupting. It’s a common pitfall in our busy lives. Dr. Michael Zigarelli wisely points out, “What we do under pressure is a telltale sign of who we really are.” Our reactions in high-stakes moments reveal much about our true selves. However, all is not lost.

To cultivate a culture of listening and continuous improvement, we recommend integrating the following practices into your routine:

Weekly Check-Ins: Whether you’re a CEO or a frontline supervisor, make these five questions a part of your routine to enhance communication and support:

  1. On a scale of 1-5, how was your week?
  2. Provide a brief update on your projects and goals.
  3. What’s going well? What wins can we celebrate?
  4. What challenges are you facing?
  5. How can I help or support you?

Embracing these practices can transform your leadership approach and strengthen your team. Interested in helping your managers level-up in their leadership competencies? Email us at info@risingsunconsultants.com.
