Leadership, Feedback & the Gift of Growth

[Guest post: We’re excited to bring you this reflection on leadership and growth from José Elvir, Co-Director of Global Operations at Partners Worldwide.]

This week I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with my team for 1:1 performance reviews. These moments are more than a checkbox or formality—they’re sacred spaces of reflection, truth-telling, and alignment.

One thing I’ve been reminded of: the best reviews are two-way conversations. Vulnerability must go both ways—but especially from the leader. Asking, “What can I do better to help you thrive?” is not a sign of weakness—it’s a reflection of strength rooted in humility.

Some of the most meaningful words a leader can hear are:

  • “You got my back.”
  • “You add value to me.”
  • “Your support is part of my success.”
  • “Your role advocating for our success matters.”

These aren’t just affirmations—they’re signs that leadership is doing what it’s meant to do: create space for others to flourish.

Leadership is not a title or position. It’s a calling—to serve, to sharpen, to uplift. It demands that we stay humble, open to feedback, and always committed to growing alongside those we lead. As the proverb says, “Iron sharpens iron.”

To every leader walking this journey: keep asking the hard questions. Keep showing up with humility. And never forget—our greatest impact lies in helping others live out their calling to its fullest potential.
